Wear and Tear: Face Edition

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Our skin takes a brutal beating in the harsh winter months. Winter brings an array of great things such as snow, cheer and happiness. But, there is always the downside of unhealthy and dehydrated skin. It’s hard enough keeping your skin looking fresh and vibrant daily. We try and try to exfoliate and maintain our skin by moisturizing regularly to keep the rough, dry skin away that Jack Frost brings. Yet, no matter how many precautions we take, we still cannot get the radiant youthful glow we strive for. For decades now, physicians have been using chemical peels to get rid of all that unwanted, dry, wrinkled skin.
What is a chemical peel and how can it help?

Chemical peels are a skin transformation procedure intended to improve the overall look of the skin. During a chemical peel, a solution is applied to the skin’s surface. This causes the surface skin cells to break and “peel” off, thus allowing new, healthier skin to emerge. The new skin’s appearance will be smoother and with fewer visible wrinkles.
Who is a top applicant for a chemical peel?

The ideal applicant for a chemical peel is someone with fine lines who is looking for tighter skin. Chemical peels can also be performed on other parts of the body as well such, as the neck, arms, legs, and hands.
What other benefits are there to having a chemical peel?

The Top Ten:

1) Improves the tone and texture of your skin’s appearance.
2) Reduces unwanted age spots, freckles, and hyper-pigmentation, including melasma
3) Softens wrinkles and fine lines
4) Abolishes acne scars and clears away acne conditions
5) Stimulates the production of collagen for firmer, youthful and supple skin
6) Hydrates skin, giving it a glow
7) Smoothes skin by removing dry skin and revealing new skin
8 ) Removes the appearance of sun damage
9) Results can be seen in just a few days
10) Treatments only take 45 minutes

Which chemical peel would be right for me?
There are two popular types of chemical peels on the market right now that we use for our clients; Vi-Peel and Micropeels. Chemical peels are intended to deal with a multitude of skin problems we battle during the winter months, along with other issues such as dehydration, skin texture, acne problems, sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles and poor pigmentation.

Vi-Peel is a new, deeper chemical peel that we offer our patients. Vi-Peel provides powerful results with no pain at all! This procedure will improve the look, tone, quality and texture of your skin, making your face smoother than a baby’s bottom. Age spots? Who needs or wants those? Vi-Peel will reduce or even eliminate age spots making you think that you found the fountain of youth! In addition, this procedure will stimulate the production of collagen and soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The benefits are endless!

When Micropeels and Silkpeel™ Dermalinfusion™ are used together, they will bring better results for skin rejuvenation and retexturing of the skin. Micropeels cause minimal skin irritation, so you won’t need to take any time off!

Get ready for that summertime glow, and peel away that dry winter skin with a chemical peel at Paradise Medspa.

Avoiding Weight Gain During the Holidays

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

The holidays are about spending time with those closest to you. However, it’s easy to over-indulge throughout the end of the year with all the holiday parties, dinners and potlucks. Paradise MedSpa wants to help you avoid falling into the weight-gain traps this month with these smart tips.

1. Curb your hunger
Don’t go to a holiday event hungry. Have a healthy snack before leaving. A handful of nuts, granola or fruit are great options. By eating a snack before arriving, you’ll avoid over-eating high-calorie foods served at the party.

2. Don’t mix alcohol and dessert
Alcohol and desserts are both empty calories, full of sugar. Pick one or the other to enjoy. It’s easy to forget that alcohol is high in calories. Remember, the average glass of wine has nearly 200 calories! If everyone else has a drink in their hand, try club soda with lime, it will give you a glass to carry around like everybody else.

When choosing desserts, be sure and pick ones that you really want to indulge in. Be picky! Store bought treats, available year round, should be skipped, since they aren’t anything special. Save your calories for seasonal, made-from-scratch desserts.

3. Avoid eating leftovers
It’s okay to indulge in delicious treats once, but avoid eating the leftovers. Encourage others to take extra food home. If you can’t give them away, throw them away. The longer it lingers in the fridge, the temptation to eat the extra calories will increase. Remember: out of sight, out of mind.

4. Offer to bring a dish
When going to a holiday party, offer to bring a dish. This way you’ll have at least one healthy option to choose from. Hummus and veggies, nuts, or fruit salad are popular dishes that everyone will enjoy while helping to keep you from over-indulging. Your host will appreciate the extra help, too.

We wish you all the very best holiday season. Need more help fighting off those holiday pounds? Book SmartLipo or a VASER procedure for two or more body areas and save $1000 when you book before December 31st.

H2-O-Yeah!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

It’s that time of the year again! The sun is out and temperatures are rising. While most of us enjoy the sunshine, the heat can act as a catalyst for dehydration and exhaustion. During these scorching summer months it is especially important to stay hydrated because your body loses water through sweating, exercising and other activities. Some medications can cause excess fluid loss, and heat and sun stroke are much more likely to occur in a state of dehydration.

You can prevent illnesses and improve your cellular health by simply drinking adequate amounts water. Did you know that consuming your body weight in water is optimal for cellular health? This should amount to one ounce of liquid per pound of weight, up to about 160 ounces.

Eating water filled fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon and leafy greens, can be another strategy (a tasty one too!) to increase your hydration. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins from the body, and without this fundamental fluid these toxins can build up and escape through skin pores. Thus, we see acne and other skin irritations such as eczema to occur more often. H20 is also believed to contribute to skin plumpness, thus eliminating annoying conditions such as circles or bags around your eyes.

Water composes 60% of our body-it’s one of our most basic and vital needs for our survival. So this summer, buy a fancy new water bottle to encourage yourself to drink more of this essential liquid, or perhaps switch out that next soda you pick up for an ice cold glass of H20.

Preventing Stress from Taking a Serious Toll on Your Health

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Our everyday lives are filled with pressure, anxiety and worry. From moms, to students, to business professionals, stress has become a regular, daily occurrence that we are forced to live with. While a little stress is completely normal, too much of it can eventually lead to long term health issues which could have been preventable.

From the Adrenal gland, our bodies produce a hormone called cortisol. This hormone is vital in managing stress. Small increases in this production of cortisol will have positive effects on the body. Specifically, cortisol controls blood sugar levels needed for fuel, fat and protein metabolism for energy and cellular repair, immune system function and containing inflammation. In stressful situations, sometimes referred to as “fight or flight”, cortisol allows our bodies to move and respond quickly.

However, excess anxiety causes extremely high levels of cortisol to be produced on a continuous basis when our bodies constantly endure long periods of being on “high alert.” When too much cortisol is produced, this can result in the damaging of healthy tissues, thus causing fatigue to the human body. If your adrenal glands are fatigued then you likely feel tired, crave carbohydrates, gain weight around your middle, suffer recurrent illnesses and feel achy most of the time. Once the adrenals are fatigued, your sex hormones are affected, leading to premature and worsening menopause and andropause.

All of these ailments are triggered by STRESS! Don’t let stress affect your everyday health and energy. If you feel that you have chronic stress or are constantly exhausted, consult with Dr. Sarna at Paradise Medspa to learn about the Adrenal Recovery Program. This program is designed to help regain your adrenal functions with herbal and hormonal support.

Long-Lasting Option Will Make You Smile

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

There’s a new craze sweeping the nation and it has to do with nasolabial folds. You may ask, what do those have to do with me? Well you’re actually adding them to your face every day as a result of smiling! These ‘smile lines,’ (deep wrinkles that look like parentheses around your mouth) can now be avoided. Rumor has it that there’s a less expensive, long-lasting solution to those lines that make us look so much older.

The rumors are true. Paradise Medspa is pleased to start offering its patients Artefill. Artefill is a different kind of injectable dermal filler that uses unique microspheres that are not absorbed by the body, so it stands the test of time. In fact, studies have shown that patients who have received Artefill injections showed an improvement in their wrinkles even five years after the treatment. Collagen or fat injections typically last only a few months, since the enzymes of the injections start to break down immediately. That can mean several costly injections a year! But Artefill actually stimulates your body’s natural collagen to grow, making the results last for years. With only one or two injections of Artefill needed, you can see how the savings add up.

There are 3 steps involved with a patient getting Artefill:

1) The skin test to ensure that they are not allergic to Bovine collagen
2) The initial injection 2 weeks after the skin test to ensure there are no adverse reactions
3) A 10 week follow up with potential for additional syringes to achieve full correction (results last 3 to 5 years because it is your own collagen.)

If you’re still not intrigued, here’s another reason that people are jumping on the Artefill bandwagon. Most patients need only one or two treatments, depending on the depth of their wrinkles, and you can resume normal activities right away so there’s virtually no downtime. It’s been praised as being a very safe, simple in-office procedure and allows you to admire your results almost immediately. Who doesn’t like seeing immediate results and experiencing no downtime after a procedure?

SilkPeel- Not Your Average Microdermabrasion

Friday, June 11th, 2010

The journey to find a long-term acne solution can often be difficult and time-consuming. It’s often frustrating to try out the various options-medications, pills, skin treatments-and many times the names and ingredients of these treatments only make things more confusing.

Microdermabrasion procedures are commonly used for those facing acne problems, but these treatments can be harsh on sensitive skin. Paradise Medspa now offers a much gentler and more effective alternative for your pesky acne problems, the SilkPeel. If you suffer from mild-to-moderate acne or feel as though your skin is dried out from the summer heat, consider what this innovative procedure can do for you.

So what makes it different? The SilkPeel does not use crystal particles that are commonly used in regular microdermabrasions; this leaves the skin feeling more smooth and moisturized after treatments. The SilkPeel uses a hydrating topical solution while exfoliating the skin to keep it moisturized and smooth. There is no downtime to this procedure and it usually takes less than 30 minutes, leaving you to return to normal activities immediately.

While your skin will certainly feel renewed after just one treatment, 4-6 treatments are recommended for best results. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen as well, in order to keep your renewed skin healthy and protected.

Botox for Sweating!

Friday, May 21st, 2010

The weather is certainly heating up here in Arizona! Paradise now offers a FDA approved Botox treatment that aids in the management of extreme underarm sweating. The injection presents great outcomes to patients who excessively sweat during Arizona’s hot summer months.

The injection is given in a series through a very fine needle. The process takes 10 to 15 minutes, which is relatively quick for something that provides such great results! When Botox is injected under the arm, it blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. The blockage ONLY occurs at the site where the injection is given, so sweating will continue in other parts of the body. However, patients do not typically report excessive sweating in other areas.

Once these injections become effective, patients report being able to stop carrying dress shields, stop carrying changes of clothing and switch to a regular deodorant instead of a prescription antiperspirant.

Botox injections under the arm are really great for the rising temperatures and will make the summer hassle-free!

SmartLift – The most modern SmartLipo procedure!

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

So you want to look younger, get rid of those wrinkles, and keep up your youthful appearance? Of course you do! In today’s market there are many demands for wrinkle creams, firming gels and extremely invasive surgeries. All of these options can create stress and frustration. What if there was a new, hassle-free and minimally-invasive way to make your face look great? There is, and it’s the latest non-invasive procedure on the market, The SmartLift.

From Cynosure, the creators of SmartLipo and SmartSkin CO2, comes SmartLift-the SMART alternative to face lift surgery. The SmartLift technique employs the SmartLipo Laser and the SmartSkin CO2 process, in order to tighten the skin from the inside out. In one session the combination of lasers are applied to the face and neck to stimulate collagen, smooth lines and wrinkles, improve the discoloration associated with sun damage, and improve skin laxity.

To acquire results similar to those seen with a more invasive face lift method, patients can combine the SmartLift procedure with other in-office therapies such as Botox/Dysport and dermal fillers. Some of our patients have reported looking up to 10 YEARS younger with just ONE treatment. Do something for your face that you have never been able to do before – try SmartLift!

Liposuction- Why Suffer for Beauty?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Traditional Liposuction is suffering and so are the patients who are going under the knife for this procedure! Many of us desire leaner, more sculpted, figures and have found that liposuction may be the answer to our prayers. Finally, a way to get rid of unwanted fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise! But with so many different choices of “liposuction” procedures out there, Smartlipo, Body Jet Lipo, VASER/ultrasound Lipo, or traditional power-assisted or mechanical liposuction…..how do you choose which is the right one for you?

Well, let me explain - Traditional Liposuction, whether power-assisted or hand-driven, employs larger cannulas to mechanically disrupt (think - cheese grater) the fatty, subcutaneous, layer followed by use of a suction device to remove the chunks of fat. Due to the brutal nature of this procedure, most surgeons opt to treat patients under general anesthesia, but some do perform the operation under tumescent (local) anesthesia with sedation. The mechanical technique does not give the physician the ability to avoid nerve endings or blood vessels and, therefore, results in a great deal of bruising, swelling, and superficial nerve damage. In addition, when patients are treated under general anesthesia, not only do this increase the risk of the procedure due to the use of the anesthetic medications, but also takes away the verbal feedback from the patient as to their level of discomfort - a vital tool when trying to avoid complications, like perforating bowel or other internal structures. Compression garments must be worn for 4-6 weeks in effort to decrease swelling and help with skin retraction post-operatively. The cost for these procedures is typically higher due to the need for general anesthesia and use of an operating room.

So, you still want to get rid of that fat?! OK, there ARE other options. Laser-assisted liposuction came on the scene about 10 years ago. These devices use small, laser cannulas (usually about 1 mm in diameter), inserted under the skin after infusion of local anesthesia, to gradually “melt” away the fat in the area before the fat is then suctioned. This tool has also been shown to produce approximately 50% more skin tightening due to the effect of the laser energy on the overlying skin. I have found this to be a wonderful tool to address small body areas or localized fat deposits. Results are seen quickly because the laser spares the surrounding vasculature and nerve endings from damage, so we see less bruising and swelling. Compression garments are only required for 1-2 weeks after the procedure which is typically done on an out-patient basis in the office. This is a great option for treatment of superficial fat in relatively small, thin, individuals. At our office, we use the SmartLipo laser which was the first FDA approved devise for this purpose and has stood the test of time compared to it’s competitors on the market. Price for treatment? Approximately $1500 per body area.

Have more than just a “little” to lose? Newer technologies include ultrasound-assisted liposuction, such as the VASER device and water-assisted devices such as the Body-Jet. We use the VASER here in our office and I love it. This tool allows me to treat larger patinets, patients who may have had previous liposuction procedures (who may have some scarring or fibrosis in the area), and men, who, typically, have more fibrous fat. These patinents need a more aggressive approach. The powerful ultrasound energy targets the deeper fatty layers and easily disrupts tougher fat, such as male breast tissue or fat that has been previously liposuctioned. Patients get more dramatic results and seem to be happier with their overall treatment. Post-procedure bruising and swellling is expected for up to two weeks after the procedure but much better tolerated than what is typically seen after traditional liposuction cases. Body Jet Lipo is new to the market and employs high-pressured water to disrupt the fat cells before suction is applied. The makers of this device tout less downtime and discomfort for their patients with this method. Having seen the procedure performed first-hand, I am not convinced that it offers any real benefits over the ultrasound device, except that it may play a better role in fat harvesting for reinjection into other areas such as the breasts or the face, since it does leave the fat cells intact rather than melting them before suction. Both of these techniques are good at targeting deeper fat and may be used in larger individuals. That being said, I would still recommend use of a laser device to help aid in skin tightening as an adjunct to either therapy. In my practice, I routinely use the VASER device to get at the deeper fat layer followed by the SmartLipo to target the superficial layer and give the finishing touches. Price? Approximately $2000 per body area. Results? Perfection!
