Life Coach Corner

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

We’ve all made the decision at one time or another. We say “I’m going to be healthy so I can live a long, productive life!” Or, “I’m not going to be like that!” Or, when we see a particularly vibrant, elderly person we say, “When I get to be that age, I want to be just like her…or him!

And then we carry on just as we have always done it. We forget that we want to be healthy and live well because something else is more pressing or urgent. We get comfortable in the easy chair with our feet up after a long day – and we forget those little words we uttered –“I’m going to be healthy”.

We are too busy to exercise, unable to manage the stress in our lives and are confused as to what a healthy lifestyle actually is!

To take some of the confusion out ‘healthy living’, or if you just need accountability to reach your goals, schedule an appointment with Elfie Klassen, our certified Life Coach. Sessions start at only $60!

Many Thanks!

Supporting Our Troops!

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

As many of you know, my husband, Greg, deployed to Afghanistan in October 2010 with the U.S. ARMY. I have been incredibly touched by the show of support I’ve been given over the past year, with prayers for his safe return and words of encouragement for my family and I to help keep our spirits up while he is away. As I am writing this today, he remains stationed outside of Kabul with his troops and hopes to return to Phoenix by the end of October.

I know that there are many other Military families out there, like ours, that are going through similar situations and I want them to know that they are not alone. Deployment is a scary time, not only for the service member, but for the families that they leave behind. Many families don’t have the resources that I have had and are struggling both emotionally as well as financially. The holiday season is an especially difficult time to be separated from our loved ones. As we enter this season, I want to reach out to those Military families and to our troops stationed overseas as a show of support.

Paradise Medspa & Wellness is setting a goal to raise $5000 by the end of the year as a donation to The USO Organization. The USO lifts the spirits of America’s troops and their families. A nonprofit, congressionally chartered, private organization, the USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities.

From now through the end of December, we will be giving our patients the opportunity to donate by participating in our ROUND UP FOR THE USO! Each transaction at our office will be rounded up to the nearest dollar (or more, if you want), with the extras going directly to our USO Fund.

Please join us on Saturday, December 10th for our Holiday Party in Paradise as an additional way to show your support. USO donations made on the day of the event will enter you to win one of many amazing prizes, including skin care and nutraceutical products, services like Botox, Dermal Fillers, Laser Treatments, Facials and MORE! This year’s Holiday Party is our way of saying THANK YOU to our loyal clients as well as to our men and women in uniform who are protecting our country! We appreciate your support so very much and hope to see you Paradise soon!

Back to School Time

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

It is back to school time which means time to think about early morning breakfast, school lunches, and scheduling dinner around sports!

During this very busy time of the year it is easy to get caught up eating fast food on the fly, however both your children and yourself will perform better if healthy nutrients are part of your menu.

Make breakfast fun with protein and fruit smoothies, pre-made egg casseroles, or peanut butter pancakes. Pack fruits and vegetables in the school lunches and have them available as after-school snacks. Try crock pot or precooking on the weekend to have dinner available before rushing out for sports. If nothing else, focus on proteins, fruits and vegetables that help create energy for the body and the brain. Stay away from processed, fast foods that are full of sugar and fat. Consider a daily Multi-Vitamin like Multigenics IC, essential fatty acid (fish oil) like EPA DHA 725 and probiotics like Ultraflora DF for the whole family.

For those of you stay at home parents, take this time (all be it small) to rejuvenate yourself while the kids are at school. Try a Myer’s cocktail to increase your energy, boost your immune system and improve your overall wellness. Dr. Myers coined this combination of B vitamins, Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin C in a liter of saline to be infused through an IV. This direct shot to your bloodstream provides a boost to your energy, immunity, and mental clarity. The 90 minute infusion time is a great excuse for taking a much needed nap!

Stubborn Skin Problems Are a Thing of the Past

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Everyone wants clear skin, but some people have a harder time getting it than others. Good lifestyle habits such as drinking enough water, wearing sunscreen and getting enough sleep certainly help keep your skin healthy. And for many people, over-the-counter face washes and acne products get rid of blemishes. However, some skin-care issues don’t respond to these simple remedies and require more intense treatments.

If you’re looking to unclog your pores or hydrate your skin, you can get a facial with medical-grade products. Here at Paradise MedSpa, we are one of the only places that use PCA, SkinMedica and Eminence Organic products in north Phoenix. They’re soothing to the skin, and you can use them at times when more intense treatments are not appropriate, such as during pregnancy. Facials are also relaxing, so they’re good for your mind, too!

If a medical-grade facial doesn’t do the trick, you can try microdermabrasion, which exfoliates your skin while applying products chosen for your skin’s needs. We use the SilkPeel Dermalinfusion system, which is a gentler alternative to traditional dry microdermabrasion, in our Phoenix office. It moisturizes the skin while exfoliating it, making it a more soothing way to treat acne scars, fine lines and sun damage. Laser facials are another method for treating these sorts of problems. They can help even out skin pigmentation and eliminate sun damage with no more than a little irritation at the targeted spots on your face.

To reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the face, there are the numerous options you’ve surely seen advertised on TV. There are dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Radiesse, and wrinkle-smoothing injections like Botox and Dysport. Wrinkles occur when the collagen and fat under the skin decreases over time. Dermal fillers replace this with naturally occurring compounds that reduce the wrinkle. Botox and Dysport are brand names for botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily paralyzes the muscles in the targeted area to smooth out wrinkles. All of these procedures are short, in-office procedures that immediately result in smooth, youthful-looking skin.

For those of you who want a more drastic facial-rejuvenation treatment, we’re the leading provider of SmartLift in Phoenix, which uses laser treatment to stimulate collagen development and tighten the skin on your face. This procedure yields results similar to those of a surgical facelift without the scarring or long recovery time.

Curious about any of these treatments? Look around our website, or give us a call. We’d love to help you clear up those stubborn skin-care problems once and for all so you can feel confident and look your best!

A Pin Point on Acupuncture

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Acupuncture has been around for centuries. It’s thought to have originated in China more than 5,000 years ago. So why should we consider acupuncture in Phoenix as a means for healing? For one reason, it isn’t a thing of the past. Acupuncture is a vital form of health care that provides a natural form of healing. Your body has 12 meridians, which run vertically along your body. Each meridian runs to a different organ. According to the practice of acupuncture, disease is caused by an obstruction in the flow of energy to these channels. The studies on acupuncture have shown that it controls both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Further proof also specifies that acupuncture motivates the release of brain chemicals such as endorphins. These endorphins trigger the brain to give your body the pain relief it’s searching for without the use of medications.

You’re probably thinking, how does sticking a tiny needle in my body going to help me out?

The holes from needling the acupuncture points create an entrance into the meridians and remove any obstructions. The acupuncture points provide gateways to influence, redirect, increase or decrease the body’s vital substances: qi (energy) and blood, thus correcting many of the body’s imbalances.

Most patients turn to acupuncture to treat pain; however, it also helps with hormone imbalances, irregular menses, fertility issues and anxiety. For more information, book your acupuncture consultation today, and find your place in Paradise.

Red Bumps Are OUT, Smooth Bikini Lines Are IN!

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

In case you didn’t notice, the temperature is really heating up under the hot desert sun. How does this seasonal shift affect you? It’s bikini weather! We all experience those unsightly red bumps around the bikini line. While red bumps might be more attractive than a forest where it shouldn’t be, we’re here to offer alternatives to tame your nether tresses.

Tips for shaving:

Make sure you always use a new razor. They tend to get dull after a few uses, so it’s important to regularly toss that old razor in the trash. Don’t be cheap! Be chic. Or should we say Schick? After all, your goal is a smooth bikini line, not a bump-covered one. Keeping old razors isn’t only unhygienic; you’re also more likely to experience ingrown hairs and irritation. Next, give your skin time to hydrate. Try using a wet towel or soaking in the tub to allow your pores to thoroughly open. The hair will be softer, and your skin will be properly prepped. Finally, protect your skin! Make sure you use a heavy cream, lotion or oil to moisturize the area. Lathering up with soap will only dry out your skin, so don’t do it! Try to shave over the area as little as possible. The more times you sweep over an area of your skin with a razor, the more likely your skin will become irritated. You’ll have to shave every few days to keep your bikini line in-check, so make sure you account for the extra time you’ll spend in the shower. If you still get ingrown hairs or little red bumps, you can hold a warm compress against the skin for about 10 minutes every day. The skin will soften, and the hair will naturally work its way out. In addition to that, you can use a corticosteroid to relieve any itching or an antibacterial ointment to prevent any potential infections in the area.

Tips for waxing:

Need a longer-lasting fix for your bikini area? One option is waxing. If you haven’t had your skin waxed before, it’s a good idea to seek professional assistance. Most people simply cannot properly do a waxing job in that area at home. There are countless sticky strips, and it can be extremely painful. What’s the benefit of waxing? Results from waxing can last three to eight weeks, but you have to let your hair grow to a quarter inch before you can wax again. While waxing can be easy, it’s important to remember that even the greatest professionals might miss ingrown hairs in the area.

Tips for laser hair removal:

You’ve been primping this area for years, maybe even decades. You might want to toss in the towel and accept the fate of an untamed bikini line, but alas, it’s swimsuit season! There is still one last option: Phoenix’s leader in laser hair removal —you guessed it…Paradise Medspa. Most people need five to six treatments before they achieve their desired results, but think about never having to shave or wax that area again! At Paradise Medspa we use the Cynosure Elite laser system for hair removal. This laser uses two separate wavelengths of light, allowing customization for each patient’s needs based on skin tone. The laser targets the growing hair follicle by heating it and damaging its blood supply so the hair cannot grow back. Your skin will need to be treated every four to six weeks to make sure each growth stage is successfully destroyed, leading to permanent hair reduction. The feeling you will experience during laser hair removal is compared to a series of rubber band snaps against the skin, and mild, temporary redness can occur after the treatment. But no more shaving or ingrown hairs, meaning no little red bumps!

What’s your preferred method for reducing those little red bumps? Let us know on Facebook at www.facebook.com/paradisemedspa, and make sure to let us know if you have any questions about laser hair removal!

Bikini Body, Baby!

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

This summer is your summer! You’ve been working on that healthier body since January. But if you’re still shying away from that yellow polka-dot bikini, we’ve got your remaining inches covered.

If dieting and continual exercise still don’t seem to be enough, then you might be interested in our body contouring services to achieve your desired physique. Paradise Medspa & Wellness is proud to offer one of the latest and greatest liposuction technologies: SmartLipo. It’s minimally invasive, achieves dramatic results, and produces minimal bruising and pain.

Why is SmartLipo so great?

SmartLipo at Paradise Medspa is most effective in treating small areas of localized fat on the face, neck, arms, back, waist, abs, hips, thighs and knees. Patients will experience a two- to four-inch decrease in the treated area. Typically, patients only need one treatment to achieve their desired results, and the SmartLipo laser tightens the skin in addition to removing stubborn areas of fat, decreasing the skin’s laxity and the appearance of cellulite. Since little tissue damage occurs, there is minimal bruising. Patients who undergo laser body-sculpting at Paradise Medspa are given a local anesthetic, and the procedure is done while you’re AWAKE! This results in a quicker recovery time, and most patients are back to work in 24-48 hours!

Need additional inches removed?

A great enhancer to SmartLipo is VASER—the unique ultrasound-assisted liposuction technology. With the addition of VASER technology, patients will not only tighten and contour small pockets of fatty tissue, but VASER can successfully treat patients of all sizes who desire body-shaping. This may be a great option for you. Paradise Medspa &Wellness is proud to be one of the only North Phoenix VASER providers.

So give us a call, and dust off that bikini!

Mind Over Body. Take Control of Your Health.

Friday, April 29th, 2011

One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to maintain a healthy body. If you set yourself up for a healthy body, you’ll be happier and your healthy lifestyle will show its benefits in every part of your life.

But, where to start? Don’t dive too deep, or you won’t be able to keep up with all of your lifestyle changes. And don’t fret! We’ve put together a few tips for you to help you create a healthier lifestyle that’s also manageable.

Join a gym! When you workout in a group setting, your stamina is boosted. You’ll be more likely to do a full 30 minutes of cardio and have fun while doing it. You will also get all of the amenities that come with a fitness center such as the countless lifting machines, free weights and cardio equipment that wouldn’t make sense to keep in your own house.

Get a workout buddy. You’ll be more likely to make it to the gym or go for a run after a long day at school or work. You’ll also have healthy competition to keep your body moving. Plan out the days you will work out together and stick to it. Talk about a built in support system!

Hydrate! Make sure you purchase a reusable water bottle that you can keep on you at all times. You’re body is over half water, and sometimes you need to remind yourself to take a sip to reach the recommended 64 ounces of water your body needs every day.

Eat your healthy, fatty foods. Healthy fats like omega fatty acids are essential for your body. One night a week, eat fish for dinner, and indulge in other friendly-fat foods like avocadoes, extra virgin olive oil, cashews and almonds. They’re essential to keep your digestive system regular, and they taste great too.

Walk the extra mile. Whenever you have the chance, opt to take the stairs up a flight instead of the elevator. Even if it means getting off a floor early, a little goes a long way.

Finally, pick an exercise routine that you enjoy! If you hate to run, don’t run! There are thousands of heart healthy exercises out there from swimming or yoga to going out and dancing with your friends. Just start with something, and you’ll be on your way to the closer to grab those skinny jeans in no time!

Botox on the Brain

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Botox has become the one of the most visible and most utilized cosmetic procedures when it comes to preventing or diminishing wrinkles. As of today, 11 million men and women have used Botox in the United States. And now, additional exciting news has come out with respect to another application of Botox! Something that we never would have guessed. Botox can relieve headaches. The FDA recently reported that Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) has been proven to reduce chronic headaches in adults.

Men and women can both suffer from chronic migraine pain, but women are reported to be three times more prone to suffer from migraines than men. These harsh migraines can ultimately cause depression, anxiety, stress, poor sleep habits, poor nutrition and the misuse of medications.

It has been shown that when Botox is injected in the face or neck, it can block the neurotransmitters that cause headaches. The botulinum toxin found in Botox is shown to alleviate pain caused by migraines by reducing the muscle tension created during a migraine, which puts less strain on the nervous system. Botox also helps prevent migraines from developing in the first place. Headaches can occur less often and be less severe because Botox purportedly blocks pain receptors in nerve cells. New studies show that when patients received Botox injections in the face and neck muscles, they experienced half of the migraines they generally suffered from monthly.

Studies show that 80 percent of migraine patients that have Botox injections experience migraine relief for up to four to six months. Patients experienced fewer and reduced strength migraines over that time period. Studies also established that patients that had injected Botox at various sites like their eyebrows, eyes, forehead and the side of the neck have even experienced immediate relief from migraines. Headache and migraine relief—now that’s Paradise. Call about a Botox consultation today!
